Hair Loss 101: Causes and Symptoms

What are the Main Causes and Symptoms of Hair Loss?

hair loss

Hair loss is not a fun side-effect to have to deal with and can cause many of us to become self-conscious about our appearance. However, most of us will not be able to avoid it, either early on or when we get older. There are many different types of hair loss as well as causes. Some are inevitable but some can be prevented and treated. Here are the main causes and symptoms of hair loss:

Hair Loss Causes

Family history – Hair loss is inherited in most cases, also known as male or female-pattern baldness.

Stress – This could be from physical stress from surgery or an injury, an illness or emotional stress.

Chemotherapy – This powerful medicine destroys cancer cells but also the cells that help you grow hair.

Physical damage – Pulling on your hair too tightly from ponytails or braids can cause loss. Using curling irons or straighteners too often, as well as coloring your hair can damage it as well.

Age – The older you get, the less your hair will grow naturally. Your hair will get thinner and tends to break more often.

Poor diet – Protein and iron are big building blocks for growing your hair. Any deficiencies in these two will have cause you to lose hair.

Thyroid disease – Most commonly hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism will play a big part in hair loss as well, also combining with stress and diet.

Hair Loss Symptoms

Your symptoms will depend on the type of hair loss you have. Thinning hair happens over time, so you will probably not notice them falling out. If you hair is shedding, you will lose your hair in clumps that fall out. You may notice hair on your pillow after sleeping, or excessive hair in your brush or shower. A general loss of hair would cause you to lose hair all over your scalp, but focal hair loss is in just one area. Inherited hair loss will cause bald spots around the forehead or on the top of the head.

3 Hair Replacement Solutions

small_3664996852With the abundance of options out there in the hair replacement industry, it can be overwhelming to sift through the amount of information out there on the topic.  Many people have sought the help of a hair replacement salon offering a full line of products to help them choose which hair replacement solution is right for them.  In this blog, read about 3 hair replacement solutions that may work for your thinning hair.

Micro Point Solutions

Micro Point Solutions is an ideal product for those experiencing thinning hair.  Whether your hair has started to get thinner, or if you’ve always had thin hair, Micro Point Solutions is ideal for giving your hair instant body and volume.  This healthy and safe alternative to traditional extensions uses Cyberhair, which is 1/3 the weight of human hair, so it won’t pull or cause stress to your naturally growing hair.

Hair Systems

Hair systems are great for people who need partial coverage for thinning or bald areas.  There are four different types of hair systems to choose from, depending on the amount of partial hair loss you are experiencing:

  • Part System – Ideal for thinning in the part and/or crown area
  • Top of Head System – Ideal for thinning and/or bald on the top of the head and/or sides
  • ¾ System – Ideal for overall thinning but for those who still maintain a natural hairline
  • Integration System – Ideal for over all thinning hair

Hair systems are ideal for men and women with Alopecia Areata, Trichotillamania, or medically related hair loss.

Full Cap Wigs

Full cap wigs are designed for full coverage of your scalp.  There are three options for the cap portion of the wig:

  • Machine Made
  • Monofilament Top
  • Fully Hand Tied

All full cap wigs consist of a combination of fabrics and compounds to replicate natural hair growth patterns and the look of the scalp.  Machine made caps work well for people experiencing partial hair loss.  They are made of a smooth elastic so it has the ability to stretch to fit one’s head.  This option may present limitations in quality.  Fully hand tied caps have knots that are tied very close together with 3-4 strands of hair per knot.  This type of cap is durable and gives the illusion of hair growing right out of the scalp no matter where you part.  Monofilament Tops combine the two caps, which includes a fully hand tied top and a machine made back, which allows wearers to be comfortable with a natural looking top.

Breast Cancer Treatment & Hair Replacement Options For Pregnant Women

small__4455140588Breast cancer during pregnancy is a rare event.  In fact, according to, it is diagnosed in about one pregnant woman out of three thousand.  After reading this blog, you’ll understand the different treatment options and what to consider after giving birth.

A diagnosis of breast cancer is scary enough, however a diagnosis while pregnant means your treatment plan needs to take into consideration yours and your baby’s life.  The treatment plan essentially depends on the stage of pregnancy:

First Trimester

Neither chemo nor radiation therapy are recommended during the first three months of pregnancy.  Radiation therapy has been proven to increase the risk of birth defects, so if that is the preferred treatment, it should be held off until after giving birth.  Breast conserving surgery can be an option, but it does need to be followed up with radiation therapy, so may not be the preferred treatment option.

3rd & 4th Trimesters

Because of the affects and strength of chemotherapy drugs, it was long assumed that it would harm the baby.  However, there are certain chemo drugs that do not increase the risk of birth defects to the fetus if used later on in the pregnancy.  These drugs have not been studied in the first trimester due to the potential damage to the fetus.

If treatment can be held off until after the birth of the fetus, many chemotherapy drugs and hormone therapy drugs can be passed through the breast milk, so breastfeeding is not recommended.

Have you or someone you know that is pregnant been recently diagnosed with breast cancer?  If you choose chemotherapy as your treatment method, you will begin to lose your hair after about two weeks after your first treatment.  Pregnancy can be difficult enough, but when you don’t feel or look your best, it can take the joy out of expecting a child.  DK International wants to be a part of your breast cancer support team.  DK International is a hair replacement salon located in Chanhassen, MN, which is just outside of Minneapolis.  Call today for your free one-hour consultation so you and your technician can find the hair replacement system that fits your style and budget.  Connect with DK International on Facebook so you can keep up to date with us on how we’re helping our clients with their hair replacement needs!

NBCAW: Signs And Symptoms Of Breast Cancer

medium_8100979149Did you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?  Since many of our clients are going through chemotherapy treatments due to the diagnoses of breast cancer, we’d like to recognize the month of October by creating a blog series to educate on breast cancer.  After reading this blog, you’ll understand some of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and what to look for if you think you’re at high risk of developing cancer.

After age 45, it’s important for women to include mammograms as part of their annual preventive care physical.  Mammogram screenings have been responsible for early detection of breast cancer in large numbers, however in some cases mammograms are ineffective, so understanding what symptoms to look for becomes increasingly important.  Below are 7 symptoms of breast cancer:

  • Unfamiliar lump or mass
  • Full or partial swelling of the breast
  • Dimpling or irritated skin
  • Pain on the breast or nipple
  • The nipple turning inward
  • Thickening, redness, or scaling of the nipple or breast skin
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk

Cancer spreads through the body from the breast by traveling through the lymph nodes.  Because of this, soreness, swelling, or a lump under the arm or around the collarbone could be cause for concern and should be discussed with your health care provider.  If you have any of the aforementioned symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have breast cancer.  The best thing you can do is stay calm and consult with your doctor to confirm the cause of the symptom.

Have you or someone you know been recently diagnosed with breast cancer?  This can be a stressful time, especially if you decide on chemotherapy for your treatment and learn that your hair is going to fall out.  DK International is here to help ease your concerns about losing your hair due to chemotherapy.  DK International is a hair replacement salon located in Chanhassen, MN, just outside of Minneapolis, MN specializing in hair loss due to medical reasons.  Contact us today for your free one-hour consultation and let us help you in your wig shopping needs.  Connect with us on Facebook so you can see how we’re helping our clients with their hair replacement needs!

3 Solutions For Trichotillomania Sufferers

small__3982668517People with the impulsive hair pulling disorder, trichotillomania, may choose to seek treatment or therapy to deal with their disorder.  However, even though treatment is sought, individuals with trichotillomania may still be suffering from the embarrassment of bald spots caused by their disorder.  There are several options available for trich sufferers who are transitioning into recovery, of which I’ll explain in this blog.

Trich can, for some people, become so bad that their hair pulling is causing noticeable bald spots in their hair.  When treatment is received, the hair pulling may stop, but the bald spots are still there.  Below are three options to help you transition from your excessive hair pulling disorder into recovery:

Micro Point Links

If you have some hairs to work with, MicroPoint Links may be the answer you’ve been looking for to cover up bald spots from trichotillomania.  MicroPoint Links are four Cyberhairs that are attached to one of your existing hairs.  They are great for highly visible areas such as the top and sides of your head.

MicroPoint Panels

If you’re experiencing thinning hair in the back of your head, MicroPoint Panels will work great to bring back the thick look of your hair while your natural hair grows back in.  MicroPoint Panels are attached using a safe adhesive, which is easily removed if need be.  Made out of Cyberhair, they look, feel, and style just like your regular hair.

Hair Support

Excessive hair pulling can damage hair follicles.  If you’ve been a long-time sufferer of trichotillomania, you may need to rejuvenate follicles to get your hair to grow back.  HairSupport by HairMax is a topical solution that cleans the scalp and follicles and stimulates hair regeneration.

Are you currently being treated for trichotillomania?  DK International understands how difficult it was for you to seek treatment in the first place.  In your free one-hour consultation in our private consultation room, one of our experienced and compassionate technicians will educate you on your different hair replacement options.  DK is also understanding about your privacy during this difficult transition in your life.  We’re here to help, so contact us today!  To learn more about the different ways we can help you with your hair replacement, connect with us on Facebook where we share our blog updates!
