How to make your wig less shiny and more natural

Shine on, you crazy diamond

How to make your wig less shiny? People often say that you should shine bright like a diamond…but they were talking about your personality, not your wig, friends. If you are using a synthetic and shiny wig due to hair loss, we want to help you (and your wig) achieve its voluminous, natural, and beautiful potential. Wigs that are made of synthetic hair often have a protective coating on the hair fibers. With that coating, wigs tend to last longer. However, the hair itself has a distinct, unnatural shine or glare to it. It’s a fun aesthetic to go for the gleam of an obvious wig sheen… but if your wig goal is to blend in with ordinary hair, it doesn’t work so well. Your reasons for wearing a wig are personal and can stay that way. Luckily, we have prepared a few quick tips that will make your wig less shiny and virtually unlockable to the naked eye. You will enjoy beautiful and long locks while shining like the diamond you are.

To remove shine from your wigs quickly and easily, we do not recommend unnecessary or expensive products. In fact, most of these wig care remedies can be found in your home right now. Are you ready to look more natural and feel more fabulous?

Apple Cider Vinegar

The first trick we have up our sleeve is apple cider vinegar. Vinegar acts like natural fabric softener and it can do real magic for your synthetic hair. Start by pouring 1/2 cup of vinegar into a full sink of warm water. Put your wig into this mix and let it sit submerged for about 15 minutes. Soon you will start to see something happening in the water – distinct white trails on the water surface will emerge. That is the sign that chemical reaction is happening: the vinegar is releasing the protective coating on the wig.

Drain the sink and take your wig out. Rinse your wig very thoroughly. Put it on a wig stand and comb it gently, detangling as you go. Let it dry for a few hours. For a final touch, use some baby powder and comb it with your hands – that will dull the glare a little more. Brush it once again to remove the excess baby powder, style as you wish, and you are ready to go. Wig care 101: complete.

Dry Shampoo & Fabric Softener

Dry shampoo is one of the best and most instantaneous solutions to making your synthetic wig less shiny. You can just spray the shine away. Most dry shampoos will do the same trick and provide a quick fix with their powdery mixtures. White powder can sometimes discolor the darker wigs so use caution during application. Choose the right kind of dry shampoo for your wig: a dry shampoo that is meant specifically for darker hair colors or one that doesn’t produce a white substance.

Fabric softeners are also a great solution for removing shine from your wig. The chemicals in fabric softeners remove excess shine in a similar fashion as a dry shampoo. You will still have that healthy glow that looks like natural hair. Utilize the same method detailed above with the apple cider vinegar: soak it into water mixed with softener and wait for a few minutes. Comb it with your fingers, let it dry, style to your heart’s desire – and be amazed by the results.

Give it enough time and style strategically to make your wig less shiny

You can use all of the strategies above or you can simply wait. The shine will fade away by itself over time. Just wash as normal and your wig’s shine will gradually start to dull. This isn’t a quick fix, nor does it mean that you can’t use it creatively in the meantime! Wear the wig but strategically style it to detract from the synthetic look.

We suggest going curly! Curls are timeless and adding texture to the wig will help diffuse any obvious glare of synthetic hair. So use your curling iron wisely and enjoy long, beachy looks.
